Frisk Me New York Finest Lauren Layne 9781455561186 Books

Something told me that this would be very different from the rest of Lauren Layne's books, so I did something I'd never done before. Instead of pre-ordering the ebook and opening it the second it was delivered to my kindle, I pre-ordered and let it sit for a little while. Long enough for Amazon reviews to pop up. Once they did, I read through quite a few to get a feel for what it was going to be like, and I was surprised to find that not everyone was loving Layne's newest novel. I'm not sure why I waited for that... but now I'm kind of happy I did.
I sat down to read this book at around 6:00 this morning and finished it around 9:00 at night. (That's not solid reading time, mind you. I have two kids and put in a few hours of work as well.) But every free second I had I was reading.
And page by page, I fell in love.
I've adored all of Lauren's characters. Every. Single. One. The one time I didn't like a character, my opinion of her totally changed the next time she appeared in a book. *Cough*Olivia*Cough* So I knew I would like Luc and Ava. But I liked them in a completely different way than I've liked any of her other characters. Well, Ava, at least. Luc I loved just as much as the rest of Lauren's heartthrobs. Ava... she was a little more complex. While reading the Redemption novels and the Love, Sex, and Stilettos series, I was always thinking, "Wow. Those girls are awesome. I'm in love. I'm in *envy*." But with Ava... no. I knew from the beginning what was going to happen and all I could think was, "Please, girl... don't do it. Don't. You. Do. It." And then... "Dude... why?!?!" Something about Ava rubbed me the wrong way, but that's not particularly a bad thing. At least I don't think so. (This is where my opinion of the book clashes with the three star reviews...) Some people said that Ava wasn't a "likable" character.... Okay. So? Not all characters are meant to be embraced and loved from beginning to end. In fact, I'm more compelled to like a character if they have to win you over. Anyone can write a story about the perfect guy and the perfect gal and have you swoon over a corny, spit-polished, happily ever after. But this is Lauren Layne we're talking about, people! She delivered! The only reason you didn't like her was because she was human and you saw yourself *IN* her! (Lookin at you, three star reviewers!) Because most people at one point or another have been drawn in by the temptation to throw someone under the bus to further their own ambitions. Does it make you a sucky person? Meh, sorta. Is it okay? Eh, depends on who you ask. Is it wrong? Perhaps.... but it's HUMAN. Don't knock stars because the leading lady came off the page as someone you disliked. She earned those stars by creating a character that made you feel any emotion toward her at all, be it positive or negative. So, yeah. She was obnoxious at times (but c'mon, that was hilarious!) and she was pushy (as any fierce woman in a relationship with a headstrong man tends to be) and she did something downright villainous (c'mon, folks, that's just good storytelling.) So, yeah... she was rough around the edges. BUT!!! She was more realistic than any heroine Layne has written thus far. I. Loved. Ava.
And as for the other "flaws" that have been pointed out... the length of the book, the fact that they only seemed to be in "like", and the cover.
Okay, the length. Some say it's too long even if you like "slow-burn romances". I really didn't think so. If a book is too long (in my opinion) you can usually tell because there will be pages filled with crap you feel like you could just skim over. Not the case with Frisk me. I read every page. I was totally invested. So even though it was a little longer, the story didn't suffer because of that, and I think that's the only thing that matters.
Now, as far as being in "like". C'mon, you can't tell me that you've never been in a relationship where you're just like, "Whoa. Let's pump the brakes here. So not sure I'm ready for this." Not all people fall hard and fast and throw the L word around like confetti. I liked that they didn't profess their love by page twenty. You didn't like it? Sorry reality isn't your cup of tea.
Now.... the topic that seems to pop up in every other review. The cover.
While this isn't my favorite Lauren Layne cover, I still liked it. Does the dude on the front mesh with the vision of Luc in my head? No. Did that matter at all? Not one bit. I've seen pleeeeeeenty of books with covers that don't look a lick like you think they should. But you know that old adage "don't judge a book by it's cover"? Yeah... ya'll fail. (Still givin' you the stink eye, three stars!)
Anywho.... *whistles* Those are just a few of my thoughts. I felt this book was exceptionally well written and I'm eager to see where Layne takes this series. I'm also in desperate need of the Oxford series. Like, foaming at the mouth need... Just sayin'.
Anywho...
That's it for now, ladies.
Stay classy.

Frisk Me New York Finest Lauren Layne 9781455561186 Books Reviews

I have yet to read a Lauren Layne book that I could put down after starting. She develops her characters so well that you fall in love with both the hero and heroine.

The heroine in this book is Ava Sims a reporter. She comes from a long line of great journalists. Her family lets her know on a regular basis that she is just average. Ava finally gets her big break by covering an American Hero story on a police officer name Luc who happened to dive into a river to save a young girl. She thinks this story will be her big break to prove everyone wrong that she isn't just average. Unfortunately America's Hero isn't exactly excited to be in the spotlight.

Luc isn't happy about his sudden fame for doing his duty as a cop and a decent human being. Everywhere he goes he is reminded of the good deed he has done. While being reminded of this good deed he is still haunted by his tortured past. He is told by his superior's that he has to go along with this interview for the good of the department. Little does he know he will be with this little spit fire Ava for a couple months so that she can get all the background she needs on him.

I love the push and pull dynamics between these two characters. It's almost like there is 4 characters. Ava the reporter, and normal Ava. Then Luc the cop, and Luc the down to earth family guy. I will say Nonna was one of my favorite characters in this book!! I will definitely be reading the next book in this series.
So my Lauren Layne binge started with this book. I’m the kind of person who gets embarrassed when reading books with covers like this one in public. So I bought a version, and started it on my train ride. I really liked this! It’s about a cop called Luc, who saved a little girl from drowning. He’s now a media sensation, and can barely perform his job without being bothered. And then there’s Ava, a journalist who wants to make it to newsreader. Or does she? She’s been told to make a 3-hour special about New York’s Finest Cop. Only Luc doesn’t want his story to be told. And Ava wants to know why.

I loved many themes in this book. How this day and age, nothing can happen without it being recorded by someone. The loss of a partner. Family. Friends. It’s all important here. I love Luc’s family! They are a close, Italian family who have dinner together every week. I absolutely adore Nonna -Luc’s grandmother. The woman does not pull punches. I am a big fan of healthy family relationships in romance and fiction books, because I feel like too often the parents are absent or awful. That was definitely not the case here.

I definitely loved the romance too. Yes, I think Luc was too rude at times. But I also think he often realized it immediately and apologized -which is already something. To be honest, I don’t know whether I would’ve forgiven Ava. I know that she turned herself around. But what she did was not okay. I know that as a journalist, you need to look for the truth. But there is a difference between being a good journalist, and being a lying person who goes behind someone’s back.
