17 Christmases Dandi Daley Mackall Michele Noiset Books Reviews
From my 7 year old I really like how they traveled and some of the places that they went I've been to like North Carolina. I liked the pictures because they're really colorful.
From my 5 year old I like that they traveled and they were being silly. I love this book.
From my 2 year old who is opening the book up right now He liked the travel.
This book is the story of a family traveling to see 17 different relatives who live all across the country. Their travel is rather illogical and that's my only minor complaint with this book. The pictures are fun in this book and the writing is full of rhyme. If you travel a lot or have family all over the U.S., this would be a fun book to read to them to explain what Christmas is like in different parts of the country. I happened to grow up in L.A. and wore shorts every Christmas, but my family lives in a part of the country where we often get snow on Christmas. It was fun to be able to talk to my kids about the page from L.A. and share with them what Christmas was like where I grew up.
17 Christmases is a Christmas adventure for a family that goes on a holiday road trip to visit relatives and friends in 17 states. They start in California make their way all over the USA seeing new things and experiencing how Christmas is different depending on where you live. One thing that remains constant is the celebration of the birth of Jesus by their family and friends no matter what state they are in. We enjoyed reading this especially because my eight year old son loves Geography. They discuss 17 states and many of which we were familiar with and the ones we weren't we learned a little about. My 4 year old daughter enjoyed the story. The text is fun to read with the rhyming on each page. The illustrations do a good job of showing what a certain state may look like at Christmas Time. Then the ending of the story finds the little boy thankfully climbing into bed in his home state saying, "I thank God for Jesus and family galore, For seventeen Christmases---never a chore." We highly recommend this Christmas story especially if you find yourself traveling from place to place to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
This is a very cute, colorful, Christmas book that follows one family on a trip to different locations to visit different family members. Children of all ages will delight in the full page artwork and cute story that accompanies each page. Although there isn't a page for all 17 locations and a few are just all mentioned together on one page, this book is still adorable. It's quick to read and will be enjoyed by all!
When I notice that these parents are getting roughly 6 weeks consecutively off from work, I immediately start thinking. Gee, isn't that a lot of time off? So, trying to rationalize scenarios that allow them to do so. Some possibilities
1. Parents are both professors and the 5-6 weeks is the time between fall finals and the start of the spring semester.
2. One parent is between jobs, left one job and will start a new one in the new year.
3. Perhaps they are just independently wealthy.
But, the theories start to fall apart when you realize a few things
1. There's a rotten fruitcake and decomposing tree when they arrive home.
2. The children would have never been granted that amount of time off from school.
So, we can now assume their trip was UNPLANNED!
One more theory then for the unplanned trip
They were temporarily placed in witness protection and forced to travel around the country until the feds got the guy that was trying to find them. However, the problem with that story is that went to see people they were related to, and didn't keep a low profile.
And, now my final theory, that I think ties it all together. The parents are federal agents themselves. Notice in the story they always drop the kids off with the aunt, grandmother, great grand mother, etc. What are they doing while the kids are singing, swimming eating cake or reading? The parents are part of a sting operation to hunt down some larger crime ring. This is definitely something that needs to be covered in either a sequel or a prequel. And what kind of parents would use their children as cover for that? Some very interesting characters in this book indeed.
Now this is a fun book! Travel along with this family and take a peek at the places they visit and the people they see on their Christmas vacation trip! Colorful vibrant pictures really add to this story. We keep this in our holiday basket and read it every year! A family favorite!
