This book had me laughing out loud by the time I neared the end. Overall, I loved the setting of the story, which placed the main character in an outdoor summer work program with the Forest Service for teens. The main character is definitely a young girl who easily falls for every good looking new man that enters her life while on the job, except of course, the one that matters most. As she works her way through one predicament after another, she is slow to realize what she truly wants. But the entertainment provided by her journey makes up for her shortfalls in falling for the wrong guys (as the subtitle suggests). The only thing that brought me pause while reading was the main character's word choice when she got frustrated or when things went terribly wrong. No, she didn't swear, which apparently is what my brain kept telling me was warranted by her situations. But no, she didn't. Not even one "darn" was uttered. However, I appreciate the author wanting to keep this book a clean read. This is what lends it to being a suitable read for both middle grade and young adult readers. I will definitely look forward to reading more stories from this author!Tags : My Life As a Lumberjack or How I Fell For The Wrong Guy(s) - Kindle edition by Sara V. Olds. My Life As a Lumberjack or How I Fell For The Wrong Guys eBook Sara V Olds Reviews
"My pulse quickened to match his, and I realized that love wasn't about the movies. It wasn't about hoots of applause and heart-stopping fireworks. Those were great. Those were fun, but love, this love, my love, was quiet and secret and perfect."
WOW! I'm feeling quite giddy right now after reading this book. Sara V. Olds has just won me over with this YA contemporary.
From the first page, I adored Mercedes aka Benz. She's so funny and quirky and snarky. The fact that she made fun of her height just made her more endearing. (from one short person to another)
Trouble seems to follow her everywhere.
The boys
Can I just say "Swoon-Worthy" doesn't even begin to describe them?
The romance takes a while to build, but when it does, my oh my! It left my heart beating. It took Mercedes one summer to realise the one person who loves her for she was, was the one person she's known all her life. This is a wonderful friends-to-lovers story, one of my favourite tropes.
"You're mine, Mercedes. I've been waiting a long time for you to be ready and now I'm not going to wait any longer. I'm claiming what's mine." ~ Conor's words when he finally decides to tell Benz how he feels about her.
Er...uh..yeah, where was I? Yep. I adored this book, and highly recommend it.
My Life as a Lumberjack is one of the most entertaining books I have read this year. Mercedes "Benz" is just a hilarious, sarcastic narrator. I love watching all her adventures as part of the YCC through her eyes. I also loved watching her get a little boy crazy over some of the Forest Service leaders. It was just really enjoyable to read how Benz handle all the trouble she always seem to be in and or causing.
Benz is very confident and quite the flirt when she wants to be, and sometimes it comes back to bite her. Her best friend, Conor and her join the Forest Service Youth Conservation Corps for something to do with their summer. Their friendship goes through many changes as they grow and change throughout the course of the summer, as they get ready to enter their final year of high school.
My Life as a Lumberjack is really a book about a soon to be senior experiencing a summer in the woods working with friends, and developing a crush or two or three. It is just a fun and fast read that I thoroughly enjoyed. It is the perfect book to read to get into that summer feeling. Especially for those who enjoy spending their summer outside in the woods or camping. I even picked up a few new tricks I want to try next time we take a family camping trip.
My Life as a Lumberjack does not disappoint, and I could not be more ready to pack up and take off into the mountains for a few days. Benz is the fun and loveable character that I loved to watch stumble and fall before she picks herself up and realizes what she should have known all along.
Last night I stayed up past my bedtime as I followed Benz from one misadventure (and attractive young man) to another. I was delighted by the colorful and effortless narrative, and laughed out loud at all the scrapes this young lady got herself into. This clean, funny novel is a new favorite!
With summer just around the corner, youth will enjoy reading about this teenager's experiences in an unusual summer job. It's good CLEAN fun as Mercedes, alias, "Benz" answers a Job Corps want ad and ends up in the Youth Conservation Corps. Finding herself in the mountains as a lumberjack she makes the best of it, providing us with an entertaining read of her hilarious misadventures. Well written. Good for middle school kids.
I absolutely loved this book. Combine a bunch of teenage girls with hot forest service men(real men)in the great outdoors and you're bound to get trouble. Olds has spun her characters to fit perfectly between face-slapping antics and solid personality. There is not a dull moment in this book.
For the genre, this is an excellent example, well written and with lots of subtle local humor.
Silliness is definitely on the day's agenda as you compare the real world with what the hormone addled protagonist perceives as going on at her summer job.
lots of fun
