Leon is a vampire. His people became what they are because of infected bats. As any other vampires, they need blood to survive but they need the blood of a woman while having sex to get special power. Leon is also a pirate. His people attack boats for the money and cruise ships for women. The story is in two parts. Although both were captivating, I preferred the second one because a large part of the first is about survival on the sea, which I did not really expect. Still, the authors had to do a lot of research for it and although I may not be a good judge since I am not an expert, all seem genuinely real. You feel the tension with the storms, the lack of food/water etc.
On the other hand, the second part is action packed (and on dry land.) Most of the characters from the first book came back in the second along with many new and (VERY) interesting ones.
Characters: There is a LOT of them, but I will only mention the ones that struck me the most, starting with Leon since he earned the title. Leon is cruel as can be with a really messed up brain. That a protagonist can feel sorry for him is beyond my understanding. MINOR SPOILER ALERT: She even does something that almost made me want to put the book down. I didn't because I realized it was necessary for the story to go on. (And I am glad I continued to read!)
Peter is a good guy (very likeable) who knows so much about everything. He reminded me of a tone down version of MacGyver in some weird way. Jane is a little naïve at times but overall ok. Remy could be your best friend and she is very resourceful person. Last, Wolf, mysterious, handsome, and powerful mage, appears in the second part along with shifters, and real vampires. (I say real because they refer to Leon's people as 'normals' with a disease.)
Overall, all the main characters were well fleshed out with distinct personalities.
Although some part of the story is written in the first POV (Peter), most is written in the third person POV following the different characters, while specifying which character by naming him or her before hand. The idea is great since you see it from many different angles. The bad side is that sometimes things are repeated a few times. For example, if a character thinks about something and talks about it to someone else later, the whole thing will be written again and sometimes almost word for word. You just have to wish they don't talk about it to too many people...
Over all, the book was great. It pulled me in almost instantly, and I spent my whole weekend reading, as I wanted to know what would happen next. The authors hinted that Wolf might have a story to tell and I just can't wait to read it!
I would recommend the book to anyone who wants to be taken away for many entertaining hours. Warning: you won't be able to put it down, so make sure you have plenty of time ahead!

What a thrill ride! This book is very well written. The back story is very well done. The Phoenix are a team that write books that transport you to the world they create. "Leon's Lair" has the whole paranormal gamut of creatures. The story is about pirates who just happen to also be vampires or is it vampires that happen to also be pirates, lol. The vampire pirates have a nearly insatiable need for sex and blood. They prey on ships, including cruise ships, in order to kidnap young beautiful women to suck their blood as they rape them. Doing this gives them extraordinary powers such as mind reading and the ability to move quickly. They also increase the wealth they already have by selling valuables from aboard the ships. In this story, after looting a cruise ship and stealing several women aboard, they unknowingly allow the escape of Peter, Nick, Jane and another man in a lifeboat. After weeks lost at sea they just happen to land on the one island that is home to Leon and his pirates. The adventures and intrigues begin there with a roller coaster ride of thrills and intrigues. For me, one of the most poignant sentences in the book is, Jane - "Leon was a complex and complicated person. So filled with love for her, so filled with hope for the future, and so completely insane". This book doesn't disappoint at all!
The book has two parts. Part one is very good, fast pasted and exciting, I couldn't put my kindell down. But Am sorry to say but the second part was not, as if it was written by another person, I still had to read it to find the ending to the story. The 2nd part was just ok.
I really enjoyed this book, not your typical Vampire book, it has action, intrigue, romance, betrayal, loyalty, it was just one of those books I didn't want to put down.
This story is packed and I really mean packed with thrills, twists and layers. The writing is adventurous as you get to peek in side the paranormals heads and their pray as the story progresses. The story has it all. Lots of scary, lots of good stuff and lots of story.
I read Bram Stoker's Dracula way back in the day. Leon's Lair is my second vampire read. I love how the vampires actually become vampires in this book. It feels real and that only adds to what comes next. If you were stuck on a remote island that just happens to be "Leon's Lair" and the ones you love are in constant peril how would you survive? It will keep you turning pages! You can really sink your teeth into this one - and it might just bite back!!!
Absolutely loved Leon's Lair! It's so hard for me to find a book of this length these days that actually keeps my attention throughout. My family and I go on cruises a lot, so I really enjoyed that aspect of this book and could relate a lot to the storyline (although none of our experiences have been anything like these!). This was a very modern take on supernatural beings and mystery. The storyline was constantly changing to keep things entertaining. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and was surprised at how fast paced it was.
I decided I needed a break from my usual reads that are Business and How-To books.
I got in for an unusual ride to say the least. I'm no fan of vampire stories but I got sunk deep into the flow and frankly couldn't put the book down. The introduction of each character is such that you feel instant friendliness or antipathy. These people are either good or bad. And I mean, real good or real bad. Each scenery is precisely depicted and I was right there living it. I almost felt sea-sick during the tornado and had to look at my arms a bit later to ensure I hadn't caught any mosquito bites. The book starts a bit slow but soon picks up speed and lets you panting as numerous aspects of the story develop. Warning unexpected twists will keep you turning the pages and miss bedtime.
