Review I always enjoy Briar's point of view, and this was an absolute treat to read. Where Sandry is very careful and has a lot of self-doubt, Briar is a lot more reckless and confident. It really showcases Pierce's knack for writing great, dynamic characters that play well off one another and stand on their own.
The idea of Briar becoming involved with gangs as a reformed gang member himself showcases a lot of what Briar fought to suppress during the initial series, and I liked seeing his tug and pull between his past and his present self. My only gripe about the writing that keeps my review from 5 stars is that I wanted more with Lady Zenadia. The plot appears to be trying to tie the reason why the land is so tired according to Rosethorn and the constant references to why Lady Zenadia's garden is doing abnormally well, but the connection is never fully realized. Zenadia's reasons for funding The Vipers gang seem a little unfinished, and are pretty weak to begin with. I just wish there was a tad more to round it off.

Briar finds a young street rat stone Mage named Evvy, and becomes her teacher. Evvy looks up to him like he looks up to Rosethorn which confuses him at first. He also learns what it's like being on the other side of gangs wars.
Five stars. Why? Quick read. Some challenging vocabulary, just enough to grow, but not so much as to bog the reading enjoyment. A perfect story to build my kids love of and ability to read!
This is book 2 of a quartet that follows the circle of magic quartet making this the 6th book you should read in the series! I love how the author brings in young readers to the magical mythical life.
A confronting and powerful look at street gangs, poverty, working class children fighting for survival and child abuse. Street Magic is probably the best Circle book I've read. Briar is impatient and tactless, but also a gruffly kind and humorous protagonist. I also liked his apprentice Evvy, who was funny and resilient. The villainess is frightening and disgusting, and the scenes of people trying to escape from her are heartbreaking. There's a major focus on the environment and plants, which I enjoyed. Street Magic's world building was detailed and amazing, and the system of magic was intricate and original. There's plenty of violence and strong language.

Overall, there are high stakes, strong friendships and heartstopping action. Highly recommended for fans of the Emelan-verse.
This book is set in the world of Tamora Pierce's Circle of Magic series. This second collection shows the precocious young mages of that first series leaving their school, and traveling with their teachers.

Street Magic presents Briar (a young man taken off the streets by a mage of the Winding Circle Temple and apprenticed to Mage Rose, a plant magician) traveling with Rose to a distant city, with a rather decadent culture, with streets thickly populated with street gangs. Tamora Pierce presents with sensitivity and skill the distaste and scorn that the former gang member Briar feels for these street gangs, as well as his compassion for particular members of the gangs.

In particular, he takes under his wing a young girl with magical talents, who is both cheeky and flighty, and who lives with a dozen pet cats in a filthy pueblo. The relationships between Briar, Rose, and the little girl are developed with care and plausibility, with Pierce's usual genius for getting inside the imagination of young people. The rather prickly personality of Briar mellowing into an admirable young leader is a joy to watch.

Warning there are some gruesome elements present, and a degree of violence. Some of this is needed, for the special subject-matter. Still, it isn't easy to take.

Street Magic is book two of The Circle Opens series by Tamora Pierce and follows Briar's traveling adventures.

Briar and Rosethorn have traveled to the north, doing work as plant mages. As a former street rat, Briar makes friends with the local gang and finds a young girl polishing rocks with magic. As a street kid herself, Evvy runs from Briar's polite advances. But she soon finds out that she needs his help, and all the gangs in the city are now after her and her new magical ability.

Briar, wise in the ways of the streets, won't let them have the new student he's taken under his wing. Even when it means getting involved in gang politics, Briar defends her and teaches her magic. And when Evvy is taken from him, no one in the whole city is safe from his wrath and that of the plants that love him.
This is book 6 in the Circle Series, and I think it is the best yet. Briar Moss, a plant mage and the only boy in the group of young mages that are the central characters of this series, is on a journey with his teacher, Rosethorn. When they arrive in Chammur, they discover a land that has been used hard and is dangerously close to failure. While Rosethorn works with the local farmers, creating crops that will grow in the poor land, Briar focuses on helping the local healers by creating healing potions; he also discovers a young girl with ambient magic with rocks. When he takes her to the only rock mage in the province for training, he discovers a mean-spirited mage, who only agrees to train Evvy when Rosethorn threatens to report him to the Mage Council for sanctioning. Both Briar and Evvy (and Rosethorn) see that this combination won't work, so Briar becomes her teacher. Unfortunately others have also noted her power and want to control her and her power. When she disappears, Briar has to try to find and save her.
This is a great book engaging, exciting, entertaining!
