This is the third book by Christine M. Knight that I have read and I am glad to say that it definitely lived up to the other two, In and Out of Step and Life Song. It is beautifully written with a gripping plot, relatable and three-dimensional characters, and an ending which is satisfying, optimistic, but also realistic and believable.

Readers should be aware that this book is a sequel to the other two books that I have mentioned here. However, as with Life Song, Song Bird can easily stand alone. Knight does a great job catching up any readers who may not have gotten to the previous novels and you do not need to read the others to love this book. I think that readers are doing themselves a disservice by not reading the other two first. Many of the characters and themes featured in this story are first established in the other two and Song Bird works to build upon these, so the best experience comes from reading all three books in order.

That being said, Knight’s efforts to keep readers informed on the previous books does occasionally lead to excessive exposition. There is specifically a lot of exposition used to establish or reestablish characters’ histories and personalities. I normally do not like a lot of exposition in the stories I read, but I am oddly not bothered by it here. Knight uses this method in all three of these novels and it reflects the storyteller feel which, in turn, enhances the small-town feel of the community at the center of the stories, Keimara, Australia. So, if you don’t like a lot of exposition, this book might not be your cup of tea, but I still highly recommend giving this book a try before turning it down solely for that reason.

I have genuinely fallen in love with the characters and world which Knight has created here. I am normally not that into realistic fiction—my favorite genres are all speculative fiction—but you cannot follow the lives of characters like Nikki/Mavis and her son without rooting for them and wanting to see them get their happy—or even bittersweet—endings. The characters and situations are not perfect, and that is exactly what makes this book perfect. The characters are real people with real emotions and opportunities to grow, and I really hope that Knight decides to explore this community of characters even further.

Song Bird Christine M Knight 9780987434869 Books Reviews

I was not dissatisfied with this book in the slightest. I opened it up last night around ten because I just could not get to sleep. Well, I didn't get sleep for another few hours either. I zoomed through this book in no time and loved every second of it. I was transported into "Song Bird's" world and into the mind of Nikki (who is actually named Mavis). I was enthralled from beginning to end. This was a realistic book with real life characters and issues. It was beautifully written and easy to follow. And, the relationships and hardships were relatable in some way even though our main character is a super awesome star. I could not get enough of this book, and that is why I read it from start to finish. It is an amazing read that I definitely recommend.
