Kodiak bearshifter Ronan is in the right place at the right time to save Elizabeth, one of the few store owners who will serve shifters, during an armed robbery attempt by a punk who planned on killing Elizabeth when he was done. But when it turns out that the punk is the younger brother to the leader of the newest gang in town, Ronan's protective instincts go into overdrive and Ronan decides that Elizabeth needs a fulltime bodyguard - him - and brings her to the safety of his Shiftertown home and adds her to the collection of fosterlings living under his roof.Elizabeth soon finds herself under the protection of the entire shifter population and even though she's is independent and used to taking care of herself, and has major trust issues, Elizabeth can tell that Ronan is one of the 'good guys' and seven feet of protective shifter male is pretty hard to resist.
What a nice surprise to find this Shifters Unbound connected short, I actually really like this series and it was fun to see the past leads in supporting roles, but I really loved bearshifter Ronan, he was a real honey, big and protective, but still respectful of Elizabeth's independence. For those who haven't discovered Ashley's series yet, this short gives a good feel for the Shifters Unbound universe, along with a little teaser for the next novel, Wild Cat (Shifters Unbound, Book 3) coming Jan of 2012.

Bodyguard Shifters Unbound Jennifer Ashley Books Reviews
“I lived a long time alone. You learn to take life slowly when you live like that. Why worry about what terrible thing will happen tomorrow?”-Ronin
Bodyguard is a novella in the Shifters Unbound Series. I came across this series on audible.com and decided to give it a try. I liked the first two books so much it was a no brainer to continue this series. Anyone that enjoys a tender and steamy paranormal romance should give this series a try.
Elizabeth Chapman is an independent woman living in Austin, Texas. She runs a shop where every paycheck goes to support her and her little sister Mabel. Lizzy has always been accepting of the shifters and is happy to allow them to shop in her store. One night, a robber attempts to empty her cash till at her store. Unfortunately for him, he doesn't get far. Ronin (the sweet bear shifter from the previous books) happens to be in her shop that night. He attacks the robber and the plot really takes off. Although the robber was put in the slammer, his mafia brother is not so happy with the way events have unfolded. We are quickly reminded that shifters run this town.
As soon as Ronin protects Lizzy, the Shifters agree to take her and her sister in under their protection. Lizzy is hesitant to trust Ronin because she has always had to do everything on her own. All of a sudden she is surrounded by people that love each other and care for one another. As in the previous books, Ronin decides to "mate claim" Lizzy. This means that she is under his protection. She has the choice to accept or reject the claim. Until she makes her decision, she is committed to Ronin and he is committed to her.
“To me, you accepting my mate-claim means that I protect you, no matter what. If that includes protecting you from myself, then so be it. I take care of you, I cherish you."-Ronin
I found both Lizzy and Ronin to be completely different characters from the previous books. I really like that the author has explored so many avenues with this series. It is delightful to have the opportunity to glimpse into the future of the other main characters (that you have fallen in love with) all while experiencing the love blossom between Ronin and Lizzy.
Lizzy has a very typical damaged girl story and yet she was strong and confident and what we call here in Texas a "straight shooter". Ronin was a great compliment to her. He was big and soft and full of tenderness for her. Ronin was a bit less of an "alpha" (especially when you compare him to Sean and Liam) and yet, I enjoyed his character very much. The way he gave Lizzy space to navigate through these uncertain water, caused me to feel complete respect and adoration for him.
"He was giving her space, she realized. No man Elizabeth had gone out with had given her time to think things over. Elizabeth thought she could fall in love with Ronan for that alone."-Lizzy
The sexual chemistry is off the charts. I really appreciate the fact that Ms. Ashley can write such a steamy scene while maintaining the heart and tenderness of the characters.
Overall, Ms. Ashley has truly gained a new fan. Not only is the series set in my home state but the character development continues to intertwine and weave through the series. I thoroughly enjoy spending time in this world! I want to know if the humans will every accept the shifters. Will the collars every be banned? Who will be the next shifter to find love? Thankfully this series was released a few years ago and there are many more to read.
(PureTextuality.com) Third in this series about the shiftertown outside of Austin, Texas, this one picks up the story with Ronan, who just happens to be one of my favorite characters from the previous two books. Ronan is a Kodiac bear shifter originally from Alaska, now leader of a small clan of bears in shiftertown that live together. I say leader, but actually he is almost a foster father to some of the younger bears. He’s been alone for a very long time, and never thought he would ever mate claim anyone. That all changes when he meets Elizabeth, the owner of a small store. She is one of the few human’s that allow shifters to shop in their stores.
The story starts out with an exciting robbery of her store-not a spoiler because that really is on the first page. The robber stupidly didn’t realize that Ronan was in the store. So the two main characters meet in a highly charged part of the story. As the story continues, more bad guys are introduced, and consequently Elizabeth and her younger sister Mabel, are thrown into life in shiftertown for protection.
Shiftertown, and it’s inhabitants are all collared by humans so that they can not be aggressive. In this authors world building, human’s know about shifters and are afraid of them. So they treat them as less than animals. They aren’t allowed new vehicles, new technology, nor are they able to live outside of a shiftertown. Hence the reason that Ronan, a once reclusive Alaskan bear, has been moved away to a shiftertown willing to take him. He has built a good life there and made friends. And of course he is my favorite character in this story. He is a huge man, but tame and loving as can be. He’s extremely protective of what he considers his, and he considers Elizabeth his. Elizabeth is definitely not what she appears to be, and has a dark past. It doesn’t take Ronan long to realize this, and to get involved right in the middle of it.
I find this world fascinating from one book to the next. A lot of the characters seem like old friends now, even though I am only three books in. I have every intention of continuing on with the books as I love the world building, the characters, the romance, and each so far has featured an interesting and excitingly told premise. You could read this as a stand alone, but there are elements that continue from one book to the next, so I recommend reading from the beginning. I also recommend these to adult paranormal romance/urban fantasy fans. Great, enjoyable, and at times sensual read!
