Albert Payson Terhune remains one of my favorite authors, 20+ years after I originally read his books. His writing doesn't fail to transport the reader to his farm in New Jersey, and instills his love of dogs, especially the collie upon all who read and listen. Although his books may contain some slight violence, I have no hesitation reading his works to my three year old. His love for his dogs is easily understood, and his descriptions reflect the deep bond between dog and master. My daughter loves his works and looks forward to reading more of his stories each night. I would recommend this book to any reader, no matter their age.

Great wholesome dog book for dog lovers!
a wonderful story, great price (can't beat free!)
amazing how a dog can go through shop much! the end gives you a big surprise! (turned out way better than I thought) it is kind of short compared to other books written by albert payson terhune, but is a wonderful story all in all!!
(it is NOT worth buying the books when you can get them for free, the only difference is a couple pictures)
I recommend this book to anyone of all ages. This book was a bit of surprise to me because I've a few books by Albert P. Terhune that are the exact same type; a collie saving a person from a pond, saving a sick child, etc. But this story was actually in a chapter book format, rather than a compilation of short stories. The book as a whole was heartwarming and memorable, and I'm very pleased that I have this book. It just brings the reader even closer to Terhune's collies and the breed in general
Not one of the author's better efforts. I was raised on Lad but had never read this one. I'm not sure whether to believe a word of it. I had always thought Terhune wrote mostly the truth about his own collies, with some artistic license, of course. But this one strayed far into the realm of the unknowable. Not enough of Sunnybank, not enough of the other dogs or the Master and Mistress.
As great today as it was when I read it as a child. No wonder I kept a dictionary close by.
Another one of Terhune's collie stories. This novel tells the story of Bruce from Ugly Duckling to heroic war dog. It is rather amazing reading older books to see what cultural thoughts make thier way into the novel. If you are a German, you might want to skip this one, for Terhune was writing either during WW I or just after and there are some anti-German passages.

This book is more in the tradition of Wolf, though the ending is far different. It is an exciting and quick read.
This was a wonderful story of Bruce, who was born as a 'second', not originally of show quality, but who found a home with the Master and Mistress after a difficult start. The book starts with the story of a young boy who adopts Bruce's mother with his birthday money. The parents do not approve of the purchase because the dog is female (I don't understand what the problem was with female dogs in that era?) and the father works to get rid of the dog much to the heartbrake of the son. Bruce's mother is accidently shipped as a show dog to the Master and Mistress and has a litter of just 1 - Bruce. Eventually Bruce's mother is returned to the young boy, but Bruce remains with the Master and Mistress who grow to love him and even rescue him from a "doctor" who wants to perform experiments on him. Bruce is put into commission as a courier dog in WWI and much of the story focuses on his adventures in the war. I learned a lot about these war dogs through this book and have much appreciation for the service they provided to their human soldiers. I was surprised that the book turned out to be about Bruce and not his mother, but it was a wonderful story, I recommend it to any dog lover or even WWI enthusiast.
